Torsional Shear Testing System

The GCTS TSH-100 Resonant Column/Torsional Shear Testing System, paired with the CATS-RC/TSH module, is a sophisticated geotechnical testing solution designed for high-precision analysis of soil specimens. Capable of performing both resonant column and torsional shear tests (static or dynamic up to 50 Hz) on the same specimen, the system supports isotropic or anisotropic conditions and accommodates large vertical and shear deformations (up to ±20°). The TSH-100 accepts specimens with diameters from 38 mm to 70 mm, while the larger TSH-200 model handles 50 mm to 100 mm. Equipped with a floating motor assembly to manage axial deformations, the system offers two motor options: the standard TSH-MOT-2 (2.3 N-m torque, 1.8 kg) and the lighter TSH-MOT-1 (1.2 N-m torque, 0.5 kg) for softer soils. The robust stainless steel cell with a 1,000 kPa lateral confining pressure capacity ensures reliable performance under demanding conditions.

The accompanying CATS software enhances the system’s usability by automating complex calculations and streamlining test setup. Users input specimen dimensions and system configurations to directly program parameters like shear strain and shear stress, eliminating lengthy pre-calculations. The software conducts tests automatically, minimizing specimen degradation by optimizing frequency cycles, and calculates key results in real-time, including resonant frequency, shear modulus, shear velocity, and damping ratios. Features like frequency sweep visualization, free vibration data analysis, and manual damping determination provide comprehensive insights into material behavior. This turn-key system, with its closed-loop digital control and advanced software, is an invaluable tool for geotechnical engineers seeking accurate and efficient soil testing.
