Resonant Column & Torsional Shear Tests


The GCTS Resonant Column & Torsional Shear Testing Systems were designed to be able to perform both resonant column and torsional shear tests. This is done using advanced software as well as precise testing equipment.

 

The Resonant Column and Torsional Shear Systems feature:

 

  • Ability to perform tests on either solid or hollow cylindrical specimens
  • Floating drive and measurement system to allow for large angular and axial deformations
  • Can vibrate specimen at up to 250 Hz for resonant column test
  • Can rotate the specimen either statically or dynamically at up to 50 Hz for torsional shear tests
  • Shear deformations of up to 20°
  • Specimen diameter of up to 100mm, although other platen sizes are available upon request
  • Typical systems have confining pressure capacity of 1000 kPa, with larger capacities available upon request
  • Optional ultrasonic platens available

ASTM D7608 Standard Test Method for Torsional Ring Shear Test 

This testing system is a true 2-in-1 testing apparatus, capable of performing both the resonant column and the torsional shear test on a solid or hollow soil specimen. This system allows for complete automation of the testing procedure, allowing for easy testing and accurate results. 

 

With the ultrasonic platens, this system is capable of determining the entire shear modulus curve with significant overlap for a soil sample.
